QUARTER-BY-QUARTER ANALYSIS
First quarter: The Nets jumped out to a quick start, building a 10-0 lead behind six points from Brian Scalabrine. New Jersey continued to lead by seven at 19-12 when the Bobcats went on a 9-0 run fueled by Primo Brezec and Tamar Slay to take their first lead of the game at 21-19. The period ended in a 23-23 tie. Second quarter: Charlotte continued to play well in the second quarter and built a lead as big as 13 at 44-31 with 3:35 remaining in the half. The outstanding play was led by the Bobcats' big men -- Brandon Hunter, Jahidi White, Emeka Okafor and Brezec. Charlotte held a 10-point lead at the break. Third quarter: The Bobcats continued to maintain a 10-point lead at 62-52 with 5:50 remaining in the period when the Nets turned up the pressure. New Jersey outscored Charlotte 20-8 to finish the quarter and took their first lead since the first period at 72-70 on Rodney Buford's jump shot with one second remaining. Buford scored eight of his 13 points in the third quarter. Fourth quarter: New Jersey continued to build their lead by scoring the first six points of the fourth quarter. Charlotte committed two turnovers and missed three shots on its first four possessions. The Bobcats cut the lead to six at 91-85 on a Gerald Wallace dunk with 1:42 remaining, but could get no closer in losing their third straight preseason game.
GM & HEAD COACH BERNIE BICKERSTAFF SAYS... (on what let the Nets back in the game) We let them back in and this has happened in terms of protecting a lead. It happened in Portland and we came out here and had three straight possessions where we did not get a shot. The first one we got was a bad one in the corner and we didn't do anything to build upon the lead. I would be disheartened if we didn't have a chance, but we have been in three straight games late. (on full-court pressure) That will happen and we have to learn how to deal with it. If I were playing against a relatively new basketball team, I would do it myself. (on the point guard play) The play is not there at all and that is where the decisions are made in the back court, but then again the possessions are there and it's not like we are getting blown out. We just have to make better decisions.
INSIDE THE LOCKER ROOM
TAMAR SLAY (on playing for Bobcats) It's an opportunity to show what I can do. I didn't really get a chance to show what I can do in New Jersey because of the talent level that was here. Hopefully, God willing, I can get that opportunity to show that I can play. |
